Running Accomplishments:

I have been running for 3 years now. My parents are the ones who got me into running. My first year I ran Top of Utah and St. George Marathon. Both of which were just over 4 hrs. Last year at St. George I was on for a 3:50 but my body fell apart, I ended up waking up in an ambulance at mile 23. I sure hope this year is better.

Hobble Creek half 06- 1:47:19

Art city days 5k- 23:55

Short-Term Running Goals:

I want a 3:45 this year at St. George- even though finishing would be much better than last year

Long-Term Running Goals:

I would like to get faster and one day do an Iron Man.

Personal:

I married the love of my life. I am currently in the Nursing program at SLCC, I will be graduating this December, Yeah!! When I am not at school I work for a sports medicine Dr as a medical assistant. My schedule is pretty crazy and I will have to be doing quite a few of my runs in the afternoon or at night after a long day of school and work. I am hoping that this blog will make me more accountable for my runs and help me to get them in.

Ran in Provo ( Memorial park on Center, up 5th west to temple, and down 9th). Not a great run. Legs for some reason were tired, and my left IT band ached a bit. Just glad to get it in. Did fewer miles today as my mom is trying to get over her planter fascitis. Fun stuff!! I am going to try and get in a few more later today.

Is this the Felicia I know? Mom Jen and dad Bill. Any how welcome to the blog. Hope to see ya out.

From walter on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 19:45:22

welcome to the blog. you and your mom sound like your suffering a bit. I get IT band problems alot. It seams like they bug me at the start of a run and when im warmed up they go away. Keep up the good work.

From Pinkie on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 20:38:15

Josse- Yep its me. I still remember running one of my first long runs (Diamond Fork)with you- well behind you that is. Looks like you are doing awesome. Congrats on winning the Utah Valley Marathon. Thats Awesome!!!

Walter- Thanks for the welcoming. I feel your pain on the IT band problems. I have had IT band issues Forever! I have actually had to take off tons of time for it, had 3 steroid injections, and was in physical therapy for 5 months. Nothing seemed to help. Eventually (after 15 months)it did subside- now I just get a flare up every once in a while. I am glad to hear that yours go away when you are warmed up- mine is the opposite it gets worse the more I run

From walter on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 20:52:18

there just doesnt seem to be anything out there to help either. Just remember to stretch alot even when your watching tv or relaxing or whatever. Oh yeah and ice seems to help me also.

From MichelleL on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 23:14:47

Welcome to the blog. If you have to run in the evening I would suggest finding routes with lots of shade and plants to reduce the temperature. Good luck with your goals!

Not a great run, but got it done. Glad I was with a group or I know I would not have gone very far. Woke up not feeling great. Mile 1-3 weren't too bad but was on a downward slide from there. Nauseated, dizzy, and lightheaded the rest of the way. Took an electrolyte pill and some sport beans around mile 7- which helped some. Just didnt have it today. Forgot to turn my Garmin on after I stopped so not sure of pace- but it was pretty slow.

I get this way when I don't have enough salt in my system.

From josse on Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 11:36:42

This could be your problem in marathons and why you passed out in SG last year. I have had this problem for years and allway thought it was blood sugar. http://runningdoctor.runnersworld.com/2008/05/should-i-do-the.html?cm_re=HP-_-Top_Features_Main-_-Should%20You%20'Do%20the%20Salt'?

These are some good article on the issue. Hope you get on top of the issue.

Thanks great articles. I have had my electrolytes checked a few times- after St. George and Moab, which were fine and a few times through my doctor. I work for a sports med dr. and he is great. Sometimes my body just seems to think running is not a great idea. I wish I knew what to do- it seems like race days always end up to be on "one of my bad running days"

Felt pretty good today. My breathing was a little off. It was nice to run with my husband, he ran Wasatch Back this weekend and was still a little sore, so I had an easier time keeping up with him. Not used to the heat yet- just glad there is available water.

My class got out early today so I was able to go to the gym, before work. I hate running on a treadmill, but it was pretty hot outside. Wanted to quit at 2min. Run felt extremely hard. Legs and entire body was tired. (I was sick last night- after my run, nauseated, dizzy, and weak- even threw up once) I haven't felt great since Thursday, I sure hope I will get over whatever I have because it is wearing me out.

Question: Why is it that when there are 30 open treadmills at the gym, It always happens that a person gets on the treadmill right next to you? Plus they are always the ones that sound like an elephant is running next to you- plop, blop, plop..plop..plop.

Easy 6.5 miles. Ran up 9th to Rock Canyon, from there got on LA Freeway ran south to Memorial park. Lots of hills especially the first 4 miles. Love running trails!! They are hard but so much better than pavement.

Rode my bike to work about 3 miles.

Got sick again about 1 1/2 after running. Lightheaded, dizzy, excessive sweating and vomiting. Not sure what it going on. Seems to be getting worse.

We did a really hard 8.5 mile trail run today. Started at the soccer park in orem and ran up to the water tower. We headed E. into the canyon on the Bonneville shoreline and hooked onto a trail trail that  goes up to the rock pile. All up hill- we continued our climb until we hooked onto trail 51. Finally after 6 mile we got to start heading down. Yeah!! Hamstrings felt tight on the way up. Started getting a side cramp coming down, slowed my pace some and really focused on my breathing. Trail took us down to dry canyon and then we headed back on the Bonneville shoreline. When we got back my Garmin only said 8.5 miles- it seemed like so much more!! Run time was around 1hr 40min. Which would normally be around 11-12 miles.

We decided to try and add on- My legs were pretty beat. I made it to 10 miles and I had, had enough and called it a day- even though I was planning on doing about 14 miles.

I did wear my heart rate monitor today. Didn't notice anything too weird. It did go up to about 185-190 up some of the really hard hills. Coming down was around 130's and average 160's.

Didn't get sick today!! Yeah! Came home and immediately drank some Gatorade and ate a banana and a cheese stick. Checked my Glucose before eating it was 88.

Ran 6 miles on the dreaded treadmill today. I hate the treadmill, I get so bored. Plus it was extremely hot in the gym, but it was hotter outside. Felt pretty good today, just no ambition to push it hard. Glad to get it in as I am finding it really hard to do it all-work, school, and running. I am lacking in sleep. I hope to maybe catch up some this long weekend.

Ran LA freeway today. I was pretty shot. Legs and entire body were tired and I felt somewhat dizzy.  Its probably due to the lack of sleep this week and two pretty hard workouts. Did get to see the hot air balloons going up while we were running.

Drank some gatorade and ate a peunut bar as soon as I was done running. The last few times I have done this I haven't gotten sick after running.

Came home and took a nap. The doctor I work for wasnt in today. So I didnt have to go in till later. It was nice to get some extra sleep.

Ran LA Freeway South. Was feeling pretty good for the first 4 miles. And then I twisted my ankle on a big rock and went rolling down the trail. My ankle hurt bad and I really didnt want to get back up. Walked for a few minutes and relized that I was going to be late for work if I didnt start running again. So I limped/jogged the 3 miles back to my car. (thanks Sara for staying with me and keeping me going). Wished I had an automatic car on the way home as pushing in the clutch was a killer. Iced and took some IBU and headed off for work. Seems to be easing some, work has been extremely busy and I have had to run around on it all morning. I am really hoping that it will be fine as I need to put in a long run on Saturday.

Its pretty hilly, but beautiful, the sun was just coming up and starting to shine on the lake. Saw Ron at mile 7 and walked with him for a few minutes to hear about his bike accident. Headed down on the old highway and then eventually on the railroad tracks. Took it pretty easy- didnt want to hurt my ankle as it is still a little sore. Glad to finally get to Vivian park and get off the railroad tracks, unfortunantly we were short on miles so had to run down the canyon for 1.25 miles and back. I was pretty tired by the end. Soaked in the river for 10min. it was cold!!

Had to run by my lonesome tonight as Brandon thought it was a good idea to take a test tonight instead of run with me. Ran up Provo canyon and back down. There was a ton of people walking up the canyon- I almost felt out of place, like I should have been walking instead of running. My legs were pretty tired, especially the first few miles, but they started loosening up by the end. Overall felt pretty good, didnt try to push too hard. Did get enough cotton and bugs in my mouth that I dont think I need dinner now, YUM!

Ran LA Freeway this morning. Legs were tired, calves and hamstrings felt really tight. Went pretty slow. I think we averaged around 10:20- which is okay for how hard the trail is. Yeah my first 20 miler of the year!! Ran from the mouth of Provo canyon up to the girls scout camp up S. Fork road. Took it pretty easy the first 6 miles. (jumping over barricades as they had closed the canyon) I tried to really push up S Fork road and was able to keep up with my mom. (I think this is the first time that I havent walked any portion of this road) My Garmin kept cutting out and eventually wasnt working at all. I think my moms said 1:38:00-which is about 9:45 average. Now time for some downhill! Re-started my garmin. Felt pretty good coming down. Had to run out on the highway as they had closed the canyon and had gaurds gaurding it now. Stopped at Canyon Glen for just a sec to grab a drink and take a few sports beans. Really suprised on how great I am feeling. See Brandon a short distance a way, and my new goal is to catch up to him. Finally caught him at Timpanogos park. I am still suprised on how good I am feeling at this point, dont feel like I have just ran 20 miles. In years past I have usually ran/walked the last mile or so. My time for the way down was 1:24:00  which is about 8:20 average, which I am stoked about. Soaked in the river after. Glad to have my first 20 miler done!!

I thought it was just a side stitch but it was my whole stomach and then I got nauseated. I ended up throwing up at Timpanogos park. I am hoping that my stomach just didnt like running with food in it. (If you see a "pile" of cantalope, pineapple, and crackers it was from me) I am sure glad every run is not this bad!

56:54/8:45 Run time- my garmin doesnt caculate the time when I stop.

Woke up at 5am to go run. When I got up my stomach still hurt really bad and I was somewhat nauseated. Decided to take the morning off. (my family has been sick- 12hr flu thing) I went back to bed and just layed there until 6:30. I think I dozed off some right before my alarm went off.

Was going to try and run tonight. But ended up waiting to renew our reccomends for over 1hr 1/2. By the time we were done I was starving. After eating dinner there was no running.

Ran LA S. with my mom and dad. Felt pretty good today. My right shin was bothering me some. This somewhat concerns me as I have had a stress fracture there before. LA felt easier today. I think it was probably due to me not running at all yesterday. I think my body does a lot better if I take some days off.

Yeah another 20 miler done!. I didnt feel great today, but I got it done. Started at the start of hobble creek 1/2. We ran up the canyon 3 miles. (these were quite steep and my calves were absolutely killing me) Then it was time for some downhill. Ran back down 3 and then ran the course for Hobble Creek. My legs from my hips down didnt want to cooperate. Averaged between 8-8:45 for the course. I am actually pretty happy with my time, for as crappy as I felt. I kept telling myself that if I could do it today, that I will be in pretty good shape for next week. After ending at park, we had to run back to our cars about another 2 miles away. I was glad when some said there was a canal we could soak in- It was pretty cold, but it felt so good!!

Overall average was about 9:10 give or take.

I woke up at 5 am with horrible stomach pain. I think I may have gotten food poisoning. I havent been this sick in a long time. It was coming at both ends every 15min. Spent most the day laying on my bathroom floor, as I was to weak to walk. It was the longest, crappy day of my life. Actually fell asleep around 4pm till about 5pm. 5pm was the last time I threw up. At 7 I ate a piece of toast and drank a few sips of gatorade and actually kept it down. Tried to eat a few bites of soup, but it was just making me nauseated.

Another bad race day! Im not sure why I have such bad days when I race. I'm just glad I finished.

1-7:55 Felt good and easy

2- 7:40 Still feeling good, thought this mile was a little too fast wanted around 8s the first 3

3- 7:44

4- 7:42

5- 7:52

6- 7:50 Starting to feel it. Took some sports beans hoping to be able to hold on. Was happy with my time so far

7-8:09 Its getting hard to breathe

8- 8:02 My Dad came during this mile to help me finish. He tells me to focus on my breathing as I am breathing extremely shallow.

9- 8:29 Im losing it. Im out of breath, take a gu. Just praying I will be able to keep going. I really want at least a 1hr 45min finish and I am seeing it slip away from me

10- 9:08 Cant breathe, My dad keeps telling me to take some deep breaths, I am trying but I just cant get enough oxgen in. I stop and walk for a while hoping I can get it under control. I am so mad! Dont quite understand why I am falling apart.

11- 9:55 Really losing it. My dad is trying to get me going. I didnt think I was going this slow. Really just wanting to finish

12-8:57 My dad is having me try and pick off some people. Im just trying to hold on.

13- 9:53 (I dont think this split was right. My garmin was beeping way after the mile marks and I forgot to turn it off at the end so it was still running after I finished and was walking, hobling around) This was the longest mile of my life. I thought it would never end. I had to stop and pee on the side of the road- which slowed me down quite a bit.

.1- Not sure I didnt turn off my garmin. I did push it at the end. I think I did pass 3 people in the last .1 that were ahead of me.

Crossed the finish line and my body is done. I was having a hard time walking. Brandon jumped in to help me walk. I finally sit down and try and get some food and water in me. I am getting lightheaded, dizzy, and nauseated. I cant breathe, I feel like I am being suffocated. I try to get my body to cooperate but its not. I feel like I am going to pass out, I am trying hard not to throw up or pass out. Brandon is telling me we are going to the hospital. I am telling him I am okay, hoping that I will quickly get better. Unfortuantely I continued to get worse. I threw up some black stuff and Brandon insisted on taking me to the hospital. I finally agreed and tried walking to the car. I was able to take a few steps but I was so lightheaded that I couldnt walk. He had to carry me as I tried to keep my eyes open, I knew if they closed I would pass out. Once in the car I started to feel a little better, as long as I was laying down with my feet up.

At the ER they did some lab work-up, which fortunantely was pretty normal, an EKG was also normal. Some of the test did show I was dehydrated, so they pumped me full of fluids. After I while I was feeling quite a bit better and I was able to go home.

My family and I are quite confused on what my problem is. I am fine during my training runs, and my pace is not that much different. The only difference we can see is that on my  training runs every 4-5miles I stop for a minute or two. We are thinking that I am possibly hyperventilating on race days. (I have been searching on the internet and it seems to fit- I have the same symptoms- dizziness, near passing out, weakness, tingling) I am going to talk to my dr. tomorrow and see what he thinks. I am hoping that I can figure this out so that I will be okay to run St. George this year.

Good luck at the doctor---i hope you get it all figured out. That must be frustrating! But, after reading all of the issues you had while running, WOW! That is an awesome time for someone who was struggling so much!

From Meadow on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:39:36

I hope you find some solutions to help the races go better. I wonder if it's panic as well, I struggle with that a bit during races which makes me breath much faster and makes it all worse.

I think you have a great finish time for all the struggles you had. I'm glad you went to the hospital to make sure everything was ok.

From josse on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 20:18:54

Oh my dear I am so sorry to hear. I don't have an answer for you, wish I did. Unfortantly everyones body is so differant. But I can tell you I had many, many races that I felt the same when I finished. So sick I couldn't do anything. I started experimenting in races and finally found out for me that it is a electrolyte/salt imbalance. What are you taking durning your races?

3 measly miles today. I started school today, Uggh and we had a birthday party to go to after work. So ran late tonight with a lot of food in my belly, including cake and ice cream. I thought I would have a horrible run with all the food in me, but actually I felt pretty good. I really tried to focus on my breathing tonight, tried to slow it way down.

27:27/9:13

Did a pulmonary function test at work today, and as I suspected I was way below average. Its looking more and more like I do have asthma which is making a lot more sense. At rest my lungs are only functioning 70-75% of normal, my Dr thinks that when I am running it could be dropping to as low as about 50%, eventually my body is not able to blow of the carbon dioxide which could be causing me to become acidodic- which causes you to get really sick. This makes sense since on my training runs, we have been stopping every few miles or so. I am able to "catch my breathe and blow of extra CO2" On race days I do not stop and push my self until my body is unable to compensate.  I am crossing my fingers that we are possibly finding out what my problem is, I am really wanting to get to the bottom of it. I am starting on some daily meds to help open up my lungs and will check PFTS again in 2 weeks to see if it has made a difference.

Pinkie! I know who you are now! I was in the van with you Saturday! Tom and I were sitting by your mom and dad and got out at the earlier stop. Crazy! Did you realize who I was when you commented on my blog?

I am so glad you had a great run Saturday! Last time I saw you was when your husband was carrying you to your car after Hobble Creek. Good luck in your training! You've GOT to have a better marathon than last year! My husband was carried off in an ambulance at mile 25 in 1996! Not a good experience! But I've learned that from bad experiences we can learn very good things.

I just read through your last week of entries. I think you and I are feeling a lot a like at the moment. Just finishing is my thoughts exactly. My knee trouble is giving me lots of stress at the moment. I'm kind of wondering if it is even possible to make it across the finish line this time. In fact he is the one that gave me the nickname "Pinkie". It was soooo good to see him running!

Nice run today- easy miles. Walked the hills. I did almost get hit by a car-though that surely got my heart rate up!

Well I finally did it. Sub 4 hrs and no ambulance ride, it was a great day!! I would have really loved a 3:50 but I didn't and I am okay with it. I was glad to run with my mom and dad. (My dad is the reason I finally got under the 4hr mark, he stayed with me the entire time and didnt let me slack at the end, this was the first one that I was actually passing people, instead of being passed by a ton of people) We started out at a really conservative pace 1-9:43 2-9:36 3-8:55 4-8:27 5-8:49 6-8:23 7-8:27 8-10:13 (veyo) 9-9:31 10-9:30 11-10:03 (these were the worst miles for me, it started raining/hailing really hard and there was a ton of head wind-I was getting sick of the rain and being freezing cold) 12-9:28 13-9:01 14-9:14 15-8:35 16-8:22 17-8:47 18-10:00 (with a potty break) 19-9:32 20-8:50 21-8:30 22-8:48 23-8:41 24-8:40 25-8:49 26-9:09 .2-2:00

The best part was finishing and then getting to see Brandon-who had finished way ahead of me. He did Awesome!!! I am so excited for him.

The worst part was my hair- I really thought I was going to have to chop it. Some how it got all knotted up- it was a complete mess. It took me and my aunt 2.5 hrs to comb through it!!! OUCH!

I was so happy to see you at the finish standing on two feet and smiling. Great job on the race and I am glad you where able to get the mess out of your hair. I knew it would be hard because I have had to do that many times.

Congratulations! Way to go. Sub 4. Next time you will get your sub 3:45, when the weather is better!

Again, congratulations!

Congrats on a great performance on an ultimate Bad Hair Day! In decent weather I think you would have probably seen the sub-3:50 with this effort. So glad to you hear you didn't need an ambulance ride.

Also thanks for all the help you gave Kim beforehand to help her finish the race. And give your Dad and Mom a big congrats from us as well.

Great job Felicia! Having a bad hair day is much better than a trip to the ER! I'm glad you and Brandon both had a great day! What a cool experience to run this race with your parents! Tell them hi and congrats!

And like Tom said....Thank you so much for the help you gave me! There is no way I would have made it to the finish line this year without your help and Dr. Pratte's help!

Contgrat on a finish! I see you out running this winter sometime. I keep telling Jamie to hurry up and get back to running. We'll see how soon I can convince her. Good Job!
